Summer Social and Ski Demo

July 8th Summer Social: It’s summer! The SLSBC will be having their summer social on July 8th at 2 pm. Thanks to Bev and Larry Van Hatten for offering to host.  The Van Hatten cabin can be accessed by boat or road and is located south of the boat launch. If driving, the address is 14837 Sunshine Coast Highway and it is the first driveway after leaving Sakinaw Lake Road – follow signs to Van Hatten. If you are coming by boat, be mindful of limited boat parking. A huge thanks to Andrew Lavigne and Kits Beach Beer for providing some of the beverages for the social. This is a potluck event so bring an appetizer or similar to share.

July 8th-9th Boardroom Demo Weekend: Murray and Max Fraser from The Boardroom are coming to Sakinaw Lake for a demo weekend. This is a great chance to try out a waterski, a foil, or a wakeboard. The Frasers will bring a variety of gear to try, but it would be great if we could help them out by letting them know what are sport is and what gear we’re interested in trying. Fill out the survey here to get the most out of the demo weekend.

They will be set up at Brian Welch’s dock (next to the Van Hatten’s) on Saturday, July 8th from 9am – 6pm. You can stop by Brian’s dock on your way to or from the social on the Saturday or even pop over during the social. Brian’s cabin can be accessed by boat or road: the address is 14865 Sunshine Coast Highway. The road is the first road south of the Sakinaw Lake Road and it is well marked with names. On Sunday, July 9th, the Boardroom demo will be setup on the waterski dock.

Waterski Camp – Volunteers Needed

The WSWBC waterski camp will run Jul 21-23. We are super excited that WSWBC is able to offer this to skiers on the lake – it is a great opportunity and will be fun for the kids. We hope that folks around the lake can pitch in to make this camp a success. We need volunteers to provide boats and drivers – compensation will be provided. We are also looking for accommodations for the ski coach.

Drivers: We need experienced boat drivers for Fri, Sat, and Sun. We expect that the camp will start at about 9 am on Fri and Sun and run for approximately 4 hours. On Saturday, the camp will start at 8 am and run for 6-7 hours. If you can volunteer to drive for any part of this camp, it would be very appreciated and compensation will be provided. Compensation for drivers will be $60 for Fri and Sun and $80 for Sat. I know that Saturday is a long day, so can split this day over two drivers if needed (compensation will be split accordingly). Please email info@slsbc.ca and cc Crystal (jed@wswbc.ca) and Gord Cameron (gordcameron7@gmail.com) if you are able to drive.

Boats: We are also looking for ski boats! Older boats without Perfect Pass are fine. People who provide their boats will be compensated $200 per day and reimbursed for their gas expenses. Please email info@slsbc.ca and cc Crystal (jed@wswbc.ca) and Gord Cameron (gordcameron7@gmail.com) if you can offer your boat.

Accommodations: Finally, we need accommodations for the ski coach, Chris Horwood. He is just finishing third year university and will need a place to stay for three nights. He will be arriving on Jul 20th (Thursday) and leaving on Sunday (Jul 23). Please email info@slsbc.ca and cc Crystal (jed@wswbc.ca) and Gord Cameron (gordcameron7@gmail.com) if you have space to billet Chris.

Thanks!

WSWBC Camp and Membership Fees – Changes

WSWBC Camp

To make it easier to attend the WSWBC camp, we are offering a modified schedule for participants. Since hanging out on the dock all day might be too much, we are reducing the amount of time each skier is at the dock. Instead of being there for full days, participants will be broken into two groups of 3-4 skiers, and will ski either in the morning OR afternoon only (approximately 8am – 11:00 am OR 11:00 am-2:00 pm).  Of course, there can be flexibility with some arriving a little later and leaving earlier.  The goal is to have minimal down time with the coach never having to wait for kids to arrive.  We hope that this makes it easier for people to attend these sessions.

Skiers who sign up will still get three sets of skiing or trick skiing each day for three days. One set of waterskiing is about six passes on the slalom course, or 15-20 minutes of trick skiing. The skiers will do their sets in sequence: if there are three participants, the first skier will complete their first set and then rest for approximately 30-40 minutes while the second and third skiers do their first sets. While resting, skiers can hang out with other participants on the dock or in the water (swimming, paddleboarding, kayaking etc.), play games, have a snack, or ride in the boat to watch other skiers. This gives the kids a chance to get to know each other and bond. Kids who sign up for the camp can also bring friends to keep them company on the dock (but not participate in the camp). After the first set, skiers will move into second and third sets.

The camp costs $100 per day ($300 total) and can open the door to competitions such as the BC Summer Games (held in Maple Ridge in 2024) and the Provincials (held in Kamloops this summer). If you are interested in registering, email jed@wswbc.org or call Crystal at 250-462-1428. Registration deadline is June 12 and the camp requires a minimum of eight participants to run. Full camp information is available here.

Waterski Camp from WSWBC – maybe?

Waterski Wake-sports BC (WSWBC) is interested in hosting a waterski camp at Sakinaw Lake. Are you interested? If there are enough people who want to participate, we can make this happen! As a first step, please fill out this survey. We will be collecting responses for this survey until May 5th.

These camps run for three days (Fri, Sat and Sun) and are geared towards ages 19 and under to develop and grow the sport of waterskiing in the province. WSWBC would provide coaches and the camps would run from morning until mid afternoon with about eight participants. Participants would work on their waterskiing and also learn how to use trick skis. We would love to benefit from this opportunity so fill out the survey and let us know your thoughts!

Thanks and have a great long weekend!

Tournament Rules

Just a few days left until our annual tournament this Saturday, August 20 (Sunday if it is raining Saturday). I hope everyone is getting excited. This is a very fun event and is really meant for all levels. Don’t hesitate if you thinking of participating- you won’t regret it. And it’s also a great day for people to come together and watch all the water events. Events will run one after the other so wakeboarding and surfing may happen earlier or later than planned dependIng on participation. Participants must have a full membership and those coming for the BBQ starting at 2 pm should purchase a social membership.

Here are the tournament rules:

Waterskiing: 7 am start but show up anytime before 9 am

Skiers may choose to start at any speed / rope length, however must complete a full pass to get credit for all slower speeds / longer rope lengths. If they fall or miss a ball on the first pass they get a “rerun”.
3/4 course competitors that make all 6 balls at top speed (34 MPH) this year must compete in the full course next year! No short-lining.

Wakeboarding – 11 am start

Wakeboarders get to complete two passes of the course (green balls to green balls). You are allowed one fall, after the second fall you no longer qualify for additional points.

Surfing – noon start

Surfers get one full length of the course (green balls to green balls) to surf. You may choose to surf with or without the rope, however surfers that decide to keep rope will automatically be graded lower than ones actually surfing, regardless of tricks. You are allowed one fall.

Wakeboarding and Surfing are judged based on 3 categories: Intensity, Style, and Execution.
